Great for the car or a walk.

Long-term care planning has changed. For years, the only real option was a traditional long-term care policy. Today, many families consider hybrid life insurance policies that combine a death benefit with access to funds for qualifying long-term care needs.

How hybrid policies work

A hybrid policy is, at its core, a life insurance policy. But it includes a feature — usually called an accelerated benefit rider or long-term care rider — that allows the policyholder to access a portion of the death benefit while still living, if they meet the policy's definition of needing long-term care.

In practice this can look like:

  • Monthly payments to help cover home care, assisted living, or skilled nursing
  • A pool of funds drawn down over a defined period
  • Any unused benefit eventually passing to heirs as a death benefit

Why families consider this approach

  • "Use it or pass it on." Unlike a traditional standalone policy, the money is not lost if long-term care is never needed.
  • Predictable structure. Premiums are typically fixed when the policy is issued.
  • One conversation, two needs. It addresses both legacy and long-term care planning at once.

What to weigh carefully

Hybrid coverage is not automatically the right answer. Important things to evaluate:

  • The size of the long-term care benefit relative to projected costs
  • Whether benefits are reimbursement-based or indemnity-based
  • Inflation protection
  • The financial strength and reputation of the carrier
  • How premiums are structured (single pay vs. annual)
